Internet Solutions for Optimizing Your Website

Does your website look great, have many pictures, video about your business and services but yet you do not get many people visiting your website? It’s time to see what your Internet Presence really is.

First you need analytics! It is like driving blind without it. If your developer or SEO expert is not reporting to you monthly on your website performance about page hits, visits, landing pages, sources, top content, keywords, and Search Rankings; how do you know they are doing their job? Next write down the top 5 phrases and the top 10 single words you would use to find your website. Now go to a search website and see where you business is? Search on the phrases and top keywords. Can you find your business? Are on page 1 or did you got tired of looking past page 10? You need a report card on how your website is performing overall!

Next; is your site tuned for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Your web developer or graphics designer has probably tuned your website for performance (I hope) but less likely for you to rank well on Search Engines. Many developers add a couple of meta tags to your webpages but stop there. Meta tags are like a books index to help Search Engines categorize a website by keywords but that alone does not optimize your website for Search Engines. It is the first step of many in the Search Engine Optimization process.

This website managed by J2Net is to help guide business owners who like to Do it Yourself (DiY) or those who want to know if their webstte development team has performed more than just build a fancy website. I had client who’s developer built a wonderful website with many images and content, lots of pages about the business but was not getting many hits from the Internet. So I looked at their website and saw two major issues; 1) they had very few meta tags defined and not much detail written into the meta tags and 2) most of the website were images including the write up about the business, the staff and services they performed. All the text about the business was in a image for each webpage. So the search engines could not read the text since it was an picture and the names of the pictures were pixel size names like 320×670.jpg. Google, Yahoo or Bing won’t know what the website is about at all except for the title … it’s a blank page to them!! Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask, AOL etc search engines will index your website and look every page and every word on your webpage. So the more your write quality content about your business, the better your website will rank overall. So that does not mean stacking the deck with 100 keywords, writing content aimlessly to get a word count high or hiding text so you can repeat words; Search Engines are smart these days and will blacklist you. Follow the Webmaster Guidelines from Google and do not use ‘black hat’ techniques.

If you get an email, phone call or letter telling you that your business website has been evaulated and that your website can be #1 on the search results or search page, think twice!! There is no silver bullet or secret sauce to being #1 on a search engine result. It takes good coding practices, following thorough of SEO practices and consistent follow up like tuning an car engine to increase your Search Ranking to become #1 on a search engine page. If your business in a less competitive field perhaps you may not be to be as diligent. But if your business field is competitive in the Internet arena already, you will need to follow through on optimizing your website in every way possible. In some cases businesses may need to consider Internet advertising too to get ahead of the competition.
